3:23pm: Dr. Joel Fuhrman, a family physician in Flemington, N.J., and author of the nutrition book "Eat to Live," also says that eating food that is low in nutrients, such as candy bars, causes a person to eat more because the body still needs to meet its nutritional needs.
"If we don't meet these needs then we can't detoxify and remove waste. Then our bodies tell us to keep eating more and more food, which I call toxic hunger — basically, a food addiction."

Healthy choices
Instead of sugary treats, dieticians recommend fruits and vegetables, along with food that contains good fats like omega-3, lean protein and fiber. Some examples are nuts for lean protein and healthy fat, while hummus provides fiber and is tasty.

Other tips for smart snacking:

Freeze fresh fruit such as bananas in a plastic bag, then take them out a couple of days later to blend with ice, soy or regular milk, and a bit of cocoa powder to make a smoothie.
Snack first, then get to other tasks. Trying to eat and do other things, even simple activities such as watching TV, can cause a person to overeat because they aren't paying attention.
Be selective when grocery shopping. A good rule of thumb is if you have it, you will eat it, so avoid buying unhealthy food such as doughnuts and snack cakes and load up on fruit, vegetables and whole grains.
Snacking is important to fuel the body — get that with a balance of protein, fat and carbohydrates all at the same time.
Pay attention to the times that you tend to get cravings each day, that way you can be armed with healthy food, instead of scrambling and settling for sugary snacks.

1:50am: You know you should work out more and eat less. But it’s nearly impossible to put the words into action if you’re thinking fat. So retrain your brain to think like a thin person –- because believing you can transform your body into a slimmer version is the first step to losing weight.

Here are a few ways to get started:

Set Goals: Successful weight loss starts with creating sensible goals. It’s not enough to say you want to lose weight. Instead, set specific, measurable goals: "I will walk for at least 30 minutes every morning" or "I will fill half my dinner plate with vegetables." Set short and long-term goals and chart your progress along the way. A short-term goal might be going to the gym this week while a long-term goal might be losing 15 pounds by next year.

Make a plan: You wouldn’t launch a company without a business plan, so don’t jump into a weight loss regimen without an action plan. And get it down on paper! Write down reasons why you want to lose weight, how you’re going to achieve it and what the rewards will be. When you need some motivation –- and a reminder about why you can’t dive into the cookie jar –- turn to your plan.

Talk to yourself: Rather than indulging in negative self-talk in which you beat yourself up for being a big, fat blob, talk yourself thin –- at least in your mind. Imagine wearing a slinky, black cocktail dress (or tux) exuding confidence. When a negative thought arises, push it aside with the image of your thinner self.

Head First: When you’re particularly ravenous, visualize putting together a quick, healthy meal (think broiled fish and nuked veggies). If you’re going to a party, mentally walk yourself through the buffet line, selecting the healthiest choices in small portions. If you can avoid the pitfalls of overeating in your mind, you’ll be more likely to curb a binge when it happens in real life. The same principle applies to exercise. Before you go to bed, imagine going for a brisk morning walk or run. When your alarm goes off at 6AM you’ll be primed and raring to go.

Reward Yourself: For each goal, write down a reward that isn’t food-related –- that slinky, black cocktail dress, for example. And, after a 10-pound weight loss, you’ll have the confidence to wear it.
